The songs of Au Revoir Simone spin with all the melancholic sweetness of a failed fantasy.  They unravel into the particular ache of a neatly sealed valentine, "Love, Mom," or the sad spectacle of an empty carousel.  Striving for glitz on a barren boardwalk, frozen horses molded mid-leap are caught trying to be beautiful.  Their ceramic muscles flex on a manufactured adventure that few still believe.  Pleasing vocals wisp in from a distance on “Shadows,” crystalline but slightly muffled as the ride reaches a momentum.  The chorus whirs by in the wind – “I’m moving on / I hope you’re coming with me,” proof of movement yet devoid of progress. On “All or Nothing,” Au Revoir Simone delivers ultimatums in an almost-whisper, turning open syllables into quick vocal runs, brief melodic merry-go-rounds.  They dress a bright keyboard line in a morose finish, opting for organ drones in a brassy tinge.  Like bits of tired gold-leaf chipping off a hollow horse, Au Revoir Simone’s music drifts, broken and beautiful.  See the trio at TT’s, Saturday July 17 at 9 p.m.
