On June 23rd, These United States turned the Middle East Downstairs into a well-received lesson on musical calisthenics. A shaggy-haired team captain in raggedy denim, lead singer Jesse Elliot sported a good-natured grin for most of the set, channeling his excitement about halfway through for a jump off stage and a lap around the sizable crowd. Though not many seemed familiar with the band’s repertoire, their danceable "Honor Amongst Thieves" inspired a giddy group in back to bounce up in time with the oom-pa-pa beat. They invited the Most of All on stage for their final song –with tympany, maraccas, two drumsets and bongos, the musicians jumped and flailed, turning the stage into their own percussion playground.
