When Bomba Estereo hit the stage at Middle East Downstairs, lead singer Liliana “Li” Saumet plunged headfirst into the group’s electronically-layered Colombian beats. Projected videos flashed in neon as Saumet incited the crowd with banter that flirted between Spanish and English and vocals that bounced between song and rap.
Later in the show, a calmer Saumet crooned into the mic with eyes closed, and a fan reached out and stroked her hair, cheek, and shoulder. Saumet opened her eyes and smiled, squeezing the girl’s hand briefly before bounding back to center stage to rev up the crowd.
