The pots rattling on the stove emit a thick, spicy aroma that tickles the nose and stings the back of the throat. This is the smell of Bomba Estereo, a sizzling hot band from Colombia. Li Saumet’s smoldering vocals provide the base for every song, the flavor changing with her tone. All around her, circular rhythms spiral out from the frothy mixture of hip-hop, reggae, Caribbean dance beats, and the electronic accents that bubble up unexpectedly. The finished product ends up a smooth blend of it all, each ingredient essential to the whole.
In the song “Fuego”, the percussion starts in immediately like the flickering of a gas flame on a stove; thirty seconds later the heat is turned up full force, the guitar and vocals thrown together in all their exotic glory.
Tease your tastebuds and whet your appetite at the Middle East Downstairs on August 1st at 6:30 pm.
