The music of We Are Scientists slams open the door of the party, knocks over the nearest table, pukes on some girl’s shoes, then plows through the screen door and jumps – fully clothed – into the pool. But while the Scientists play with the energy of hooligans on a rampage, the crisp and melodic vocals dress up the brute in an impeccably tailored seersucker suit. Their music may leave a path of destruction in its wake, but it looks good doing it.
Their new album Barbara charts a varied course for the band’s endless energy to run through. “Goal! England” sears with mad energy, unleashing a howling guitar and barrage of drums that shock the ear into action; but “Rules Don’t Stop” takes an introspective and self-loathing turn, and finds the party over and our anti-hero laying poolside, damp and remorseful.
With the World Cup over, people searching for a new excuse to get rowdy in public might find one when We Are Scientists stop by the Middle East Downstairs. The shenanigans resume on July 13.
