Son Of The Sun emerges out of a dustbowl as a silty film settles over black silk and softens the band’s subtle rock edge with a western flair. The slow drawl of the vocals sidles past with the twang of a lonely guitar as a cowboy rides through a ghost town, leaving nothing but a cloud of dusty air.
The band’s new album, The Happy Loss, takes them everywhere from the stage of a rowdy saloon to a distant desert with only a solitary cactus for an audience. In "Good Ole Days", the energetic beats and stretching guitar chords lead to somewhere mysterious and slightly sinister. And like a gunslinger in a duel, we must keep our finger on the trigger of the radio, as we wonder whether this song is friend or foe. Sleepy lyrics in “Leopard Print” woo with a discreet hand gesture, the tip of a hat by a sun-browned hand. In “The Other Side”, the brim of the hat is now pulled down to cover the sadness of a lonely bar patron. A haunting tremolo guitar wafts across the back room of the bar as our eyes gradually adjust to the heavy velvet darkness.
Venture over to PA’s Lounge on July 10th at 9 pm to catch Son of the Sun.
