At times heroic, at times forlorn, We Were Promised Jetpacks’ EP The Last Place You Look follows a man’s unaided journey through Goliath crags swathed in anesthetic mist. He sinks into an unconscious obscurity only to surface in a grey reality. Repeating guitar lines outline dizzying mirages and hollow vocals fall from precipices. These illusions are his companions, fed by a festering fatigue.
In “A Far Cry,” the traveler braces himself with epic confidence. Impassioned vocals shout prayers into deserted peaks while spirited drums and insistent guitar warm his icy cheeks. A different moment is depicted in “The Walls Are Wearing Thin.” Glassy and skeletal, the song is all instrumental – his voice has left his thinning form. The man, unable to think, no longer knows whether the foggy environment of gusty guitar and swirling synths is dream or reality, heaven or hell.
Come hear a truly cinematic journey spun by We Were Promised Jetpacks at Royale on July 1.
