Audra Mae sticks, sweetens, and strands; she abandons friends in the desert with no horse, mule or donkey to carry their load. Then, after a stretch of particularly arid days she returns, wearing a honeyed smile that is hard to resist.
“The Happiest Lamb” captivates with the power of a strange vision; Mae’s voice is the heat that makes the horizon ahead wavy with steam. She sings above a twanging bass and a trotting percussion, cheery in its own right. In “The Fable” Mae’s horse slows his step and an accordion foretells the slipping of her saddle. The percussion is watchful, aware of the lurking desert night. But somehow Mae’s voice ambles forward, less honeyed and more resolved on finding moisture in her sandy soundscape.
Hot? Mae brings the arid blaze when she comes to play Sunday, June 27th at The Middle East Upstairs. Show begins at 12:30 PM.
