Young Rival’s music is the aural equivalent of a good old pair of Levi’s – basic, yes, but undeniably essential. Sticking with guitar, drums, and bass, this Ontario trio proves the fundamentals don’t have to be boring. “Your Island,” a debut track off their 2009 EP, sets light wash melodies on spin cycle. With some punchy guitar and a splash of cymbals, this track becomes a tight, two-minute sing-a-long, a pared-down pop gem with universal appeal. But as their newer, full-length LP demonstrates, Young Rival can successfully stray from the West Coast casual of “Your Island,” and rough up their sound a bit for some well-earned wear and tear. The reckless tempo on “Modern Life,” for example, definitely shreds a seam or two, as the most loved denim always unravels underfoot or at the knee. The fabric of their sound is unassumingly hip. Young Rival never sound like they’re trying too hard, making their effortless brand of cool their best accessory. They come to Great Scott with Born Ruffians on June 20. Catch the show at 9 for $10.
