In compiling this week’s Foundwaves Weekly Pick, we stumbled onto a Myspace page less than a month and a half old for Natives. This duo (or trio if the other gentleman in their press photo is a contributing member) will be joined by another Foundwaves Weekly Pick and fellow Providence band Kid Chocolate at Great Scott on Monday.
Natives build wide expanses of sound filled with doubled and multi-tracked vocals atop gently-insistent guitars, electric organs, and bouncing beats. With wordless harmonized vocals, their song “Fakes” begins like the wistfulness of an Iowan farmboy watching the flowing waves of wheat for one last time from his big-city-bound train. And then the beat kicks in with twanging guitar and the song transforms into that wide-eyed hopefulness he feels when he first sees the towering skyscrapers rising above the city of his dreams.
Natives make grand music that never loses its innocent and hope-filled core even when it ventures beyond it. Stream and download their song “Fakes” below and visit their Myspace page to listen to “You and the Ethereal”.
