Holly Miranda creates songs like melancholic fairy tales rich in fantastical and dark mysteries. With a voice undulating like ocean waves, Miranda resembles a sighing mermaid crooning to drowned sailors in the dark of night. There is something soothing and cleansing about the gentle guitar plucking and prominent keyboards that back her husky voice. Still, the occasional horns, witchy organs, and weeping orchestral accents create a certain apprehension in her music’s beauty, like the effect of hearing a wolf howl at the moon, or the silence of sinking to the bottom of the sea.

Listen to “Waves” while you view some B&W moments from her Saturday show at TT the Bear’s.
